What This Tool Tests
This accessibility checker tests your website against WCAG 2.1 Level AA guidelines — the standard required by the ADA, Section 508, and the European Accessibility Act. It identifies issues that prevent people with disabilities from using your site.
Color Contrast
Checks text and background color combinations against WCAG minimum contrast ratios (4.5:1 for normal text, 3:1 for large text). Low contrast makes content unreadable for people with vision impairments.
Image Alt Text
Verifies that all images have descriptive alt text. Screen readers rely on alt text to describe images to blind users. Missing alt text leaves them without context.
ARIA & Semantic HTML
Validates ARIA roles, labels, and properties. Checks that interactive elements use proper semantic HTML (buttons, links, form labels) for assistive technology compatibility.
Keyboard Navigation
Tests whether all interactive elements are reachable and operable via keyboard. Many users navigate without a mouse — keyboard traps or missing focus indicators block them entirely.
Why Accessibility Matters
Over 1 billion people worldwide live with some form of disability. An inaccessible website excludes roughly 15% of your potential audience. Beyond the ethical imperative, there are practical reasons to care:
- Legal compliance — ADA lawsuits against websites have increased every year. The European Accessibility Act takes effect in 2025, requiring WCAG 2.1 compliance for digital services.
- SEO benefits — Many accessibility improvements (alt text, heading structure, semantic HTML) are also SEO best practices. Google rewards well-structured, accessible content.
- Better UX for everyone — Accessibility improvements benefit all users. Captions help in noisy environments. High contrast benefits users in bright sunlight. Keyboard navigation helps power users.
Common Accessibility Issues
The most frequent WCAG violations we see across thousands of scans: missing form labels (users don't know what to type), low color contrast (especially on placeholder text and light gray UI elements), missing alt text on decorative and informational images, and buttons without accessible names (icon-only buttons with no aria-label).
Most accessibility issues are easy to fix once you know they exist. This tool identifies them so you can prioritize and address them systematically.
